ICOME takes the cultivation of high-level, top-tier innovative talents in emerging engineering disciplines as its fundamental mission. It focuses on the cutting-edge academic frontiers in fields such as smart catalysis, smart materials, clean energy, optoelectronics and sensing, and aims to create an innovation-led new paradigm for smart materials and future energy research.
The undergraduate programs offered by iCOME emphasizes in-depth interdisciplinary integration and collaborative innovation across chemistry, materials science and engineering, energy technology, artificial intelligence and other fields. In accordance with the talent cultivation requirements of “broad academic foundation, solid fundamental knowledge, emphasis on capabilities, and pursuit of innovation”, and through the “2+X+Y” model (where “2” refers to general education and professional education, “X” denotes diversified development paths, and “Y” represents integrated innovation capabilities), the program aims to cultivate leading talents in the field of smart materials and future energy.
Students are required to master a solid foundation in mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer science and artificial intelligence; grasp the basic theories, fundamental knowledge and essential experimental skills in the disciplinary direction; and receive sound scientific training in scientific research, technological development and application.
The curriculum structure consists of three main parts: general education courses (~40 credits, including liberal studies courses, english, and artificial intelligence basic courses), professional training courses (~60 credits, including Mathematics, Physics, Materials, Energy, and Chemistry courses), and integrated innovation ability training (~14 credits, including lab courses, the undergraduate research opportunity program (UROP), and thesis). From these, multiple development paths are derived: (1) the professional advancement path for students who want to advance their career in academic and research on smart materials and future energy, which combines Professional Advancement I (15 credits) and Professional Advancement II (9 credits); (2) the honors program which is a more specialized and academically rigorous undergraduate degree, involving advanced coursework and a significant research project or thesis; (3) the interdisciplinary development path that allows students to take courses from non-chemistry or non-materials majors such as biology, business, and law, etc..
